Junior Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) and senior co-captain Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) were named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Team. Skelly was a first-team honoree, while Van Mater received second-team accolades.

The advertising major is a four-time member of the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star last year.
Van Mater, a middle blocker, leads the team with 75 total blocks. With her 24 solo blocks in 2002, Van Mater has moved into eighth place all-time at SU with 64 career solo blocks. Against Providence on November 3, Van Mater set a school single-match record with an .846 hitting percentage. The marketing major is a six-time member of the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Skelly is now eligible for the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America ballot. Keri Potts is the only Orangewoman to be named an Academic All-American. She earned first-team honors in 1998.
To be considered for the Verizon Academic All-America Team, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and have a 3.2-or-higher cumulative grade point average.
