
Syracuse Wins Home Opener, 81-66, Against Valparaiso

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Hakim Warrick and freshman Carmelo Anthony both recorded their second-straight double-doubles as the Orangemen defeated Valparaiso, 81-66, in their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 24.
Anthony finished the game with a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Warrick had 15 points and 10 boards for his sixth career double-double.
Valparaiso jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Freshman Gerry McNamara hit a three-pointer at 7:23 to start a 17-4 run for Syracuse. Senior Kueth Duany scored seven points in the run, including a jump shot that gave the Orangemen their first advantage of the game, 29-27, at 2:14. Syracuse led 32-30 at the break.
The Crusaders retook the lead on a 7-2 run, giving themselves a 37-34 advantage. With 14:20 to play in the second half, Duany hit a three point shot to put Syracuse up for good, 44-42. At 5:44, the Orangemen started an 11-0 run to go up 70-57 and put the game out of reach.
Anthony scored 11 of his 18 second-half points within four and a half minutes as the clock wound down. Duany finished the game with 14 points. McNamara had 18 points and five assists. Sophomore Josh Pace led the team with six assists off the bench, along with six points, four rebounds and three steals. The Orangemen defense held the Crusaders to 29 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, including 1-for-11 from three-point range.
Raitis Grafs led Valparaiso with 18 points and eight rebounds. Joaquin Gomes earned a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards. Stalin Ortiz finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Orangemen host Colgate on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7:00 p.m.
