The honor is certainly well-deserved. Boeheim is fourth among active Division I coaches with a .738 winning percentage. He is 10th among active Division I coaches and 26th all-time in career wins with 623. He’s posted 24 20-win seasons, and was the fastest coach in college basketball history to get to the 350- and 400-win plateaus. Since the 1980-81 season, SU’s first at the Carrier Dome, Boeheim is 311-64 on the floor that now bears his name, good for an .829 winning percentage. His teams have made 11 Sweet 16 appearances and two national championship game visits.
As a player, Boeheim made the team as a walk-on in 1962 and by his senior season in 1966, he was co-captain with Syracuse legend Dave Bing. Boeheim averaged 14.6 points per game in his final year and became the 10th Orangemen to score at least 400 points in a season.
The new floor was unveiled on February 24, 2002 in a formal ceremony that took place before the Syracuse-Georgetown game.
Coach Boeheim and the Orangemen will tip-off their season against the Memphis Tigers in the AT&T Wireless Coaches vs. Classic at Madison Square Garden on November 14. Syracuse’s first home game is November 24 against Valparaiso.
