SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his Syracuse debut to lead the Orangemen to a 93-74 exhibition victory against Nike Elite on Tuesday.
In front of a crowd of 6,330, Anthony went 14-for-22 from the field, including 3-of-8 from the three-point line, and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line to lead all players in scoring.
Sophomore Hakim Warrick scored 15 points in the win, while classmate Josh Pace came off the bench to contribute 12 points. James Felton led Nike with 15 points and Dave Ferguson added 13.
Warrick put the Orangemen ahead early with back-to-back dunks to open the scoring. Senior Kueth Duany and Pace sparked a 14-4 run midway through the first to make it 31-21 with eight minutes left in the half. At the break, SU led by 10, 47-37.
Anthony scored four of his 19 second-half points within the first minute to widen the Orangemen's lead to 51-37. A 9-2 Syracuse run in the first five minutes of the half put Syracuse up by 20 at 64-44. The Orangemen never trailed in the game.
Syracuse opens its regular season Thursday, November 14, when it faces Memphis in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Orangemen return to the Carrier Dome for their second exhibition game on Nov. 19 when they host Upstate NY AAU at 7:00 pm. The regular-season home opener is Sunday, Nov. 24, when SU takes on Valparaiso at 1:00 pm.
