Senior Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus H.S.) of the Syracuse University field hockey team was named the BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year at the championship field hockey awards banquet Thursday night at the Wyndham Hotel in Syracuse. It was the first time an Orangewoman took home goalkeeper of the year honors.
Latsko also made her first appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team. She was joined by teammates Becky Kohler (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). Senior midfielder Kristin Aronowicz (Exton, Pa./Downingtown) and sophomore midfielder Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) were selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
This season, Latsko anchored a Syracuse defense that allowed just 1.11 goals per game. The four-year starter recorded eight shutouts, including a conference shutout against Rutgers, as the Orangewomen went 10-10 overall. In the latest NCAA rankings, Latsko ranked third in save percentage (.847) and eighth in goals against average (1.10). She has played every minute in goal for the Orangewomen this season. She is third on the school's all-time saves list (485 career saves). With five more stops, she will surpass Eileen Lewis (1981-84) and finish her career in second place, behind SU's all-time saves leader, Cheri Herr (653 saves).
Latsko was a third-team All-American in 2000, the same year she was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. In 1999, she was voted to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.
Kohler made her second-straight appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team. A senior back and co-captain, she helped the Orangewomen finish ninth in the nation in scoring defense (1.11) through games of the regular season.
Marks was voted to the All-BIG EAST First Team for the first time in her career. Last season, she earned second-team accolades. Marks, a team co-captain, is tied for fifth on the team in scoring with seven points (two goals, three assists). A four-year starter at Syracuse, she has tallied 32 points during her career (10 goals, 12 assists).
Aronowicz won honors from the BIG EAST for the fourth consecutive season. In 1999, she was the league's Rookie of the Year. As a sophomore and a junior, she earned first-team All-BIG EAST laurels. On SU's 2001 BIG EAST championship squad, Aronowicz was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. She is the Orangewomen's leading scorer for the third-straight season with 15 points (seven goals). She enters the 2002 BIG EAST Tournament ranked third on the school's all-time goals list (40) and fourth on the career points list (91).
Carriero earned All-BIG EAST honors for the first time in her career. She recorded seven points (three goals, one assist) in her first full season as a starter for the Orangewomen.
Syracuse hosts the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship beginning Nov. 8. SU and UConn square off in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. at Coyne Field. Villanova and Boston College meet in the second semifinal at approximately 7 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 10 at noon.
