SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse recorded its highest point total in 12 years and #Jim Boeheim# earned his 630th career win as the Orange defeated Albany, 109-79, Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# tied his career high for points with 28 by shooting 10-of-16 from the floor, 3-for-3 from the foul line, and sinking a career-high five three pointers on eight attempts. Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# posted 22 points on 11-of-13 shooting, along with nine rebounds. Senior #Kueth Duany# scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting in his 100th career game.
Junior #Jeremy McNeil# posted a career-high 14 points and a season-high nine rebounds. With five blocks on the night, he moved into seventh place on SU's career blocked shots list (142), passing Dan Schayes (140).
The Orangemen sank eight three-point baskets in the first half, including all five of Anthony's, en route to a 62-43 lead at intermission. SU went on a 17-3 run early in the game to take a 26-10 advantage. Three players from each team had double-digit points at halftime, including SU's Anthony with 19, Warrick with 14, and freshman #Gerry McNamara# with 11.
The Orangemen were very accurate from the floor in the first half, as they hit a blistering 26-of-34 (76.5). SU finished the game 63.4 percent from the floor, including 61.1 percent from three-point range.
The Orangemen used a 13-0 streak to extend their lead to 35 (98-63) half-way through the second period. Their biggest advantage would be 37 (102-65) with six minutes to play in the game, before a 14-7 Albany run made the final 109-79. SU outscored the Great Danes 60-26 in the paint, 21-7 on second-chance points, and 15-2 on fast break points.
Boeheim, who now holds a 630-222 record as a head coach (.739 winning percentage), is tied with Cam Henderson for 24th place on the All-Time Division I Coaching Wins list.
Syracuse's 109 points was the most scored by the Orangemen since Dec. 22, 1990, when they defeated Illinois-Chicago, 110-66. The last time SU scored 100 points in a game was Nov. 18, 2001, in a 103-56 victory against Binghamton.
Albany's Jamar Wilson led all players with 29 points. The Great Danes tied the Carrier Dome record with 14 three-point baskets (Seton Hall, Feb. 7, 1998; SU vs. Notre Dame, Jan. 16, 2000). The total was one short of Albany's school record.
The Orangemen play again on Monday, Dec. 30, when they host Canisius at 7 p.m. in the Dome.
