
Second-Half Surge Secures 87-69 SU Win Against Canisius

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse used a 17-point run late in the second half to secure an 87-69 win against Canisius Monday at the Carrier Dome. Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# scored eight of his 23 points in the streak as the Orangemen rallied from a one-point, halftime deficit.
The two clubs traded leads 14 times in the first half before an 8-2 run gave the Golden Griffins a 38-33 advantage as the clock was winding down. Syracuse was behind at the intermission, 38-37, for the first time since its season-opening loss to Memphis. SU sophomore #Hakim Warrick#, the game's high scorer, had 15 points in the half.
The Orangemen's luck would change, however, as a 10-2 tear early in the second half gave SU a 61-51 lead. The Griffs immediately started a 10-0 run of their own and tied the game at 61. Syracuse re-took the lead at 7:13 and never trailed again as the Orangemen outscored Canisius 24-8 in the final minutes. SU's shooting improved to 63.6 percent from the floor after the break, and its three-point shooting improved to 55.6 percent. The Orangemen were 17-of-19 from the foul line in the second half.
Warrick finished with a career-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He also grabbed nine rebounds and tied his career high with five steals. Anthony notched his seventh double-double in nine games with 23 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, including nine defensive caroms. Freshman #Gerry McNamara# scored 19 points, including a career-high 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. He has not missed a free throw since SU's Dec. 6 game against Colgate (17-17).
Canisius senior Hodari Mallory led the Griffs with 21 points and nine rebounds. Brian Dux was also in double figures for Canisius with 16 points.
Syracuse plays its first road game since its season opener as it kicks off its BIG EAST schedule at Seton Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Continental Airlines Arena.
