The men's crew and women's rowing teams competed in an individual triathlon and a combined team triathlon on Sat. Feb. 3. This is the fourth installment of the annual event. The triathlon was established to give both programs a chance to work and compete together.
"The triathlon breaks up the monotony of winter training. It brings the men's and women's teams together to compete in something that is both challenging and rewarding as well," Kris Sanford Syracuse head rowing coach said.
Times are recorded for individuals and as teams. The teams are made up of a varsity male and female, a freshman male and a novice female.
Chris Liwski won the men's individual event and two-time first-team All-American Jillian Kott won the women's individual event. The winning team was made up of Liwski, women's team tri-captain Rachael Kirchhoff, Nick Alexander and Diana Stevens.
The format for the men is running 30 flights of stairs on the upper level of the Carrier Dome. Then the competitors run to the erg room in Flanagan Gymnasium. There they complete 10,000 meters on the ergometer. The final leg of the triathlon is a 500-yard swim in the pool at Archbold Gymnasium.
The women swim the same distance as the men, run 25 flights of stairs and erg for 8,000 meters. The women complete the three events in the same order as the men.
