The Syracuse Women's Rowing program is rallying behind teammate Abby Rockwood, who was recently diagnosed with Acute Leukemia and is now facing approximately one year of intensive medical treatment.
Rockwood, a dual major in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School of Management, will receive the majority of her care at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Despite the challenges ahead, she plans to complete her degree and graduate with her class this May.
Her teammates have launched a fundraising campaign to help offset the financial burden of her treatment. Funds will go toward family travel, temporary housing near the hospital, lost income for family members taking time away from work, and preparation for a possible bone marrow transplant.
The team is also encouraging the community to join the NMDP Registry, formerly known as Be The Match. Patients like Rockwood often rely on a matching blood stem cell or bone marrow donor, and signing up is as simple as registering online and receiving a free cheek swab kit by mail.
Those looking to support Rockwood can donate to the fundraising campaign, join the NMDP Registry, or leave a message of encouragement for her and her family.
