Boeheim Court Dedication Set for Feb. 24
2/20/2002 9:58:45 PM | Men's Basketball
The celebration will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, February 24 prior to SU's men's basketball game against Georgetown. Tip-off for the game is slated for 2:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 1:30 p.m., keeping in mind that traffic around the Dome will be heavy with more than 25,000 tickets already sold for the Boeheim ceremony and The BIG EAST Conference tilt.
The recognition is in honor of Boeheim's 30 years as a full-time member of the Syracuse University coaching staff, dating back to 1972, and his four years as a student-athlete (1962-66). Boeheim also served as a graduate assistant coach at the University. A committee to name the court, led by Joe Lampe, Syracuse University Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Joyce Hergenhan, a member of the Board of Trustees, has been hard at work on this campaign since September, 2000.
The Hoyas are one up on the Orangemen this season, thanks to a 75-60 win in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 28. Syracuse (20-7, 9-4) enters the game in second place in the West Division, while Georgetown (15-10, 6-7) is fifth.
Syracuse and Georgetown are the two winningest programs in BIG EAST Conference history. SU is 239-128 (.651) in league history, while Georgetown is right behind in the second spot with a 226-141 (.616).
