Orangewomen Open Season With 15-9 Win Against Stanford

STANFORD, CA - The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team started off the 2002 season with a 15-9 win against Stanford on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET. The season-opening win is the first in the Orangewomen’s five-year program. SU now stands at 1-0 overall, while Stanford is 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) scored the first game of the game at 4:53 in the first half, and junior midfielder Jessica Trombley (Kueka Park, NY/Penn Yan Academy) followed with a tally of her own to give SU a quick 2-0 lead. The Cardinal got on the board with two goals, but the Orangewomen responded with four straight goals and entered half ahead, 8-4.
Syracuse outscored Stanford 7 to 5 in the second half in order to secure the victory.
Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) scored a game-high four goals. Sophomore Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Zimmer followed with three goals each. Zimmer also dished out two assists. Courtney Palladino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) scored her first collegiate goal in the game.
With her three assists, Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) moved into second place in career assists at SU with 30. Katrina Hable ‘01 is the career assists leader with 56.
