CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The 10th-ranked Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team ousted No. 7 Virginia, 12-10, for the Orangewomen’s first win against the Cavaliers in the program’s history on Saturday afternoon at Klockner Field.
Syracuse moves to 2-0 on the season for the first time in the program’s five-year history and the Orangewomen are now 1-3 against the Cavaliers (1-1). The victory also gives SU its first victory on the road against a top-10 opponent. The Orangewomen defeated both No.10 Boston University and No. 9 Dartmouth at home during the 2000 season.
Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) and junior Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) led the Orangewomen in scoring with three goals each.
Sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) started off the scoring for the second straight game, and Soults followed to put SU up early, 2-0. The Cavaliers responded with two goals to tie the game at 2-2 and after Soults’ second goal, Virginia tallied two more to take its first lead of the game, 4-3. SU added two more goals to give the Orangewomen the lead at half, 6-4.
Virginia started off strong in the second half, scoring three of the first four goals to take a 8-7 lead. After goals by Zimmer and Wayne to take the lead, the Cavaliers tied the game for the last time at 9-9. The Orange attack scored three of the final four goals to end Virginia’s three-game winning streak against SU.
Syracuse’s defense was led by junior Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA/Hingham), who had nine saves in goal, and junior Sami Stock (Wayne, PA/Radnor) who notched a team-high three groundballs.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, March 10 when it faces defending-national champion, Maryland, at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
