Orangewomen Host St. John's in Regular Season Finale

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's basketball team will play its final regular season game of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 26 when the Orangewomen host St. John's at 7 p.m.
The Orangewomen are having their best season since 1989-90 with a 15-11 overall mark and an 8-7 record in league play. SU has already clinched its first winning season in 12 years and with a win versus the Red Storm would assure its first winning conference slate since the 1987-88 squad went 13-3.
The game will be the final regular-season home game for SU’s four seniors - Jaime James, Leaf Newman, Tara Trammell and Jazmine Wright.
James has had one of the most productive careers in Orangewomen history. She ranks ninth all-time in scoring with 1,131 points and 10th on SU’s assist ledger with 261. James is the most prolific three-point shooter in the program’s history with 210 threes. She is the only Orangewoman with more than 200 career three-pointers and only the second SU player, men’s or women’s, to reach that milestone. Her 34.9 percent accuracy rate from behind the arc ranks second all-time at SU. James is also the only Syracuse player to have three seasons with 50 or more three pointers, and she has a chance to become the only player with two seasons of 60 or more triples. James ranks fourth all-time in the BIG EAST with 139 three-pointers during conference play. This season she is second on the team in scoring with a career-high 14.2 points per game average. She scored a career-high 33 points versus Georgetown on Jan. 19, the fourth-best single-game total in Orangewomen history. Her seven three-pointers in that game is tied for second on the SU single-game ledger. James is also a National Strength Coaches Association All-American and a three-time winner of Syracuse’s Ms. Hustle Award.
Newman is in her second season with the Orangewomen after transferring from Arizona State University. Newman has started every game this season and has played in all 53 of the Orangewomen’s game the past two seasons. During her two seasons, she is the program’s third-leading scorer with 401 points and ranks third with 53 three-pointers. Newman is one of the most accurate three-point shooters in SU history. She ranks fifth all-time with a 33.1 percent shooting percentage from behind the arc. This season Newman has scored in double figures nine times, inlcuding a season-best 21 points in SU’s last game versus West Virginia. She made a career-high five threes versus the Mountaineers and also dished out a career-best six assists. Newman was named SU’s most improved perimeter player last season. She is a BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a two-time member of the Syracuse Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Trammell is a four-year member of the Orangewomen basketball team. She has played in 68 games during her career, including six starts this season. Trammell had one of her best games of the season in Syracuse’s win at 25th-ranked Cincinnati on Jan. 8. She scored a season-high six points and grabbed four rebounds in 21 minutes of play. She also had a season-best five rebounds in in SU victories versus Seton Hall and Providence. Trammell leads the team with eight blocked shots this season. She was named the Orangewomen’s most improved post player in 2000. Trammell is a three-time member of the Syracuse Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Wright is a four-year member of the Orangewomen, playing in 103 games during her career. She has started all 26 of Syracuse’s games this season and ranks fourth on the squad with a career-high 10.5 points per game scoring average. Wright has scored in double figures 14 times this season, including a season-high 21 points in front of her hometown in Syracuse’s win at Seton Hall. She has also had a double-double versus the Pirates, grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. Wright has already surpassed several single-season career-highs in 2001-02. She is having the best season of her career with 273 points, 152 rebounds, a 52.1 shooting percentage, 42 assists and 40 steals. Wright is a two-time member of the Syracuse Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
St. John's is 3-23 overall and 0-15 in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm have lost 15 straight games. Their last victory came on Dec. 29 versus Mt. St. Mary’s. St. John’s will also be playing without leading scorer Raheedah Brown, who suffered a dislocated elbow on Feb. 15. Brown was averaging 14.6 points per game before her injury. She was SJU’s leading scorer in 12 of the 17 games she played in this season. The Red Storm’s last game was a 85-43 loss to Boston College on Saturday. Freshman Mary Pat Statler scored 11 points and junior Amanda Rawson added 10 points and eight rebounds. Patrycja Gulak is averaging 9.4 points per game and is the team’s leading rebounder at 5.9 boards per game.
The Orangewomen have clinched a spot in the 2002 BIG EAST Championship at Rutgers. Pairings for the tournament will be announced following all the conference games this evening. SU will play its first round game on Saturday, March 2.
