
Jones and Watkins Lead Orangewomen to Second Place at Armory Invite

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Syracuse seniors Aprelle Watkins (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and Opal Jones (Capitol Heights, Md.) led a host of stellar performances by the men's and women's track team with at the New York Road Runners Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. The SU women finished second out of 23 teams in the University Division with 68 points, while the Orangemen placed fifth out of 23 squads with 32 points.
Jones provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 60-meter hurdles, winning in a time of 8.40. She also won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.67 to qualify her for the ECAC Championship
Watkins won the triple jump in the University Division with a distance of 12.22m (40'1.25"). She also finished fifth in the long jump. Freshman Tatiana Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y./Clara Barton) finished sixth in the triple with a jump of 11.59m (38'00.25").
Freshman Jenna Grimaldi (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius) finished second in the high jump, clearing 1.75m (5'8.75"). Classmates Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel) and Nicole Kendrick (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) finished third and fourth, respectively in the 20-lb. weight throw. Kendrick threw the weight 16.34m (53'7.50") and Hernandez' mark of 17.59m (57'8.50") set a career-high by 1.60m. Kendrick took first in the shot with a throw of 14.07m (46'02.00"), while Hernandez was third with an effort of 13.69m (44'11.00").
On the men's side, juniors Tim Adrian (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) and Steve Bedard (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph's) placed second and fourth, respectively in the weight throw. Adrian threw 17.22m (56'6.00"), while Bedard threw a distance of 17.01m (55'9.75"). The duo took second and third in the shot put, with Adrian throwing 16.17m (53'00.75") and Bedard throwing 15.84m (51'11.75").
Junior Richard Polidore (Chino, Calif./Chino) finished third in the finals of the 200m-dash with a time of 21.99.
The men's and women's track teams will compete at the BIG EAST Championship this weekend, Feb. 16-17, at the Carrier Dome.
