SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Syracuse softball team won its third fourth consecutive game, defeating Kansas, 4-3, in the first game of the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. The Orangewomen evened their record at 7-7, while Kansas dropped to 11-8.
The Jayhawks scored first with a run in the bottom of the third, but Syracuse came right back with all four of its runs in the top of the fourth. Redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) hit her fourth home run of the season to lead off the inning. It was Julicher's fourth home run of the season, already tying her own school record set in 2000. It was the fourth game in a row in which she went deep, extending her school record for consecutive games with a home run.
Sophomore Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal) drove in a run with a single and junior Jenn Read (Vancouver, B.C./Terry Fox) plated another run with a groundout. Lincoln now has eight runs batted in on the season, two more than her total from all of last season.
The Jayhawks tried to rally, scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but SU held on for the win. Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) earned the win to even her record at 3-3. DiMaggio fired four and one-third innings, striking out nine and allowing only three hits. Senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) threw the last two and two-thirds innings to earn her first save as an Orangewoman. It was only the second save in the program's three-year history.
Serena Settlemier was the losing pitcher for Kansas. She threw three innings and allowed all four runs, three of which were earned.
