HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – An RBI single by Meaghan Almon in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Hofstra Pride to a 1-0 win versus the Syracuse softball team on Friday, March 29 at Hofstra University Softball Stadium. The Orangewomen are now 10-10 on the season, while the Pride improved to 5-19.
The teams combined for only six hits in the game. Two of Hofstra's hits came in the deciding inning. Stefanie Kenney led off the inning with a bloop double and was removed for a pinch runner. Almon then drove a single to the gap in left-center field to score the game's only run.
Both pitchers took control of the game early, allowing only four combined baserunners through the first five innings. The Orangewomen did not get their first hit until the top of the fifth inning when junior designated player Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) lined a single to left-center field.
Syracuse threatened in the top of the seventh when redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) drove a one-out double to the wall in right-center, but the Orangewomen were unable to move the runner around.
Junior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) suffered the loss despite allowing only three hits in six and one-third innings. DiMaggio struck out six and walked only two. She is now 4-5 on the season. Sara DeAngelis is now 5-14 for the season with the complete-game three-hitter.
The Orangewomen continue their weekend road trip on Saturday, March 30 with a BIG EAST doubleheader at Connecticut. The twin bill starts at 12 p.m.
