SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior pitcher Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Syracuse softball team to a 3-1 victory versus San Jose State at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. SU is now 9-8 on the season, while the Spartans are 11-20.
Syracuse is now 3-1 in tournament action at the end of pool play. After starting the season 2-6, the Orangewomen have won seven of their last nine games.
DiMaggio retired the first 13 of the first 14 batters she faced before allowing a one-out double in the top of the fifth inning. The Spartans run came without a hit in the sixth. A walk, stolen base, wild pitch and sacrifice fly brought in the run.
DiMaggio is now 4-3 for the season. She struck out eight and walked two, facing just three batters over the minimum. Brianne Ferguson was the loser. She is now 4-12.
Redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) continued her home run barrage, belting a three-run shot in the third inning to produce all of SU's runs. Julicher has hit a school-record six home runs in the last seven games. All of her hits in the Capital Classic have been homers.
Redshirt sophomore Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) and junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) each had two hits for Syracuse. The pair is SU's top two hitters for the season. Collins leads the team with 24 hits, one more than her season total from a year ago, and a .511 batting average. Dunn is second on the team with a .394 batting average (13-for-33).
