No. 5 Maryland Holds Off No. 7 Syracuse, 15-11

SYRACUSE, NY - Courtney Hobbs scored five goals to lead fifth-ranked Maryland to a 15-11 win against No. 7 Syracuse on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. In front of a crowd of 733, the Terrapins (1-2) secured their first win of the season, while the Orangewomen stand at 2-1.
Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day School) tied the game at 9-9 at the 43:32 mark off an assist from junior Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale). Three minutes later sophomore Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip) scored from a free position to give Syracuse a 10-9 advantage.
Syracuse was unable to hold the lead as Hobbs found the back of the cage 45 seconds later to regain the advantage. Syracuse came within one, 12-11, after Soults’ second goal of the game with seven minutes left in the game, but the Orangewomen were unable to come any closer. The Terrapins scored the final three goals of the game to seal the win.
Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) started off the scoring for the third game in a row 10 seconds into the game off a long pass from Soults. Maryland scored five of the next six goals to enter intemission ahead, 5-2.
Maryland was ahead by as much as five in the second half, at 7-2 and at 8-3, before the Orangewomen rattled off four consecutive goals to come within one, 8-7. Senior tri-captain Erica Mathewson (Syracuse, NY/Genesee) scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at 8-8.
Lillis led SU in scoring with three goals, and Soults and Zimmer followed with two tallies each. Soults also dished out a career-high three assists.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, March 15 against No. 2 Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
