
Orangewomen Lose to San Jose State, 9-4

PLEASANTON, Calif. - The Syracuse softball team dropped its fourth game of the National Invitational Softball Tournament, losing to San Jose State, 9-4, on Saturday, Mar. 9. SU is 1-4 in tournament play and 3-7 overall, while the Spartans are now 9-17 overall.
San Jose State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Spartans scored on an illegal pitch and a sacrifice fly. Syracuse cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning. Freshman outfielder Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) recorded her first career triple and then stole home for SU's first run.
Syracuse tied the score in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Rachel Park (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./Friendship Christian) drove in the run with a single. The Spartans took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. A double by Veronica Ramos plated the first run of the inning and a single by Dianna Lilly provided the other two runs.
SU fought back to within a run with a two spot in the top of the fifth. Rose drove in a run on a fielder's choice and sophomore Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, La./Epsicopal) drew a bases loaded walk to force home Syracuse's final run of the game.
San Jose put the game away with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Lilly and Ramos again provided most of the offense, driving in three of the four runs.
Senior Heather Brown (Farmington, N.M./Farmington) was the losing pitcher for SU. She is now 1-4 on the season after allowing seven runs and six hits in six inning of work. Carol Forbes was the winner. She gave up two runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Junior Kristen Collins (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) recorded her second consecutive multi-hit game with two hits in four at-bats. Park also had two hits for the Orangewomen.
Syracuse is now one loss away from elimination in bracket play. The Orangewomen play a late game versus either Buffalo or UNC Greensboro in the consolation bracket.
