Adrian's mark of 17.30m (56-9 1/4) in the shot put was nearly two feet better than his previous career-best of 16.75m (54-11 3/4) set in his sophomore season. The throw would have placed him second in the college men's division and seventh in the college men's championship. His throw of 54.12m (177-7) in the discus was a season best.
Junior Aprelle Watkins (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) finished 10th in the college women's triple jump championship with a distance of 12.03m (39-5 3/4). Watkins finished eighth in the eastern women's college long jump with a distance of 5.54m (18-2 1/4) on Thursday. Junior Richard Polidore (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) placed 13th in the college men's eastern long jump division with a mark of 6.77m (22-2 1/2).
The performance by Adrian comes on the heels of an impressive win by freshman thrower Nicole Kendrick (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster HS) in the women's college division of the discus on Thursday. Kendrick's throw of 52.51m (172-3), was 6.04m (19-10) farther than the second-place effort of 46.57m (152-5) by Julie Bourgon of Sherbrooke. The victory marks the fifth consecutive meet that Kendrick has won the event. She has not lost in the discus since March 23 at the Texas Southern Relaysl in Houston, Texas. The mark was one inch shorter than the personal-best throw that Kendrick, who is ranked 12th in the NCAA in the discus, heaved only four days ago at the Vielbig Invitational in Syracuse.
Classmate Jenna Grimaldi (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius HS) placed third in the women's college high jump championship division, clearing 1.71m (5-7 1/4). Senior Stacey Dwyer (Huntington Station, N.Y./Barton County CC) finished 25th out of 62 runners in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 62.58. In the running events, junior Zelma Jackson (Aurora, Colo./Barton County CC) finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season's best time of 11:02.78. Sophomore John Bitok (Kitale, Kenya/Paul Boit HS) finished 33rd in the men's Olympic development division of the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:02.13.
Up next for SU is the BIG EAST Championship in Storrs, Conn., which lasts from Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5.
