SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse University rower, Rachael Kirchhoff (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) has been named a University Scholar. The designation is the highest undergraduate honor bestowed by SU. Twelve graduating seniors from SU received the honor, eleven will be recognized at Commencement this Sunday, May 12. Kirchhoff represents the absent scholar. She will be helping the Orangewomen make a push for a full-team bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship, rowing in the varsity eight's five seat at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday in Camden, N.J.
Kirchhoff, a team captain and bioengineering major in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS), is a 2001-02 Remembrance Scholar. She was a member of SU's varsity eight, which finished sixth in the NCAA championships last year. She performed research in the University of Washington's engineered biomaterials department last summer, and the article she wrote on her work will be published in the Journal of Undergraduate Research in Engineering.
The Syracuse Scholars Selection Committee--a subcommittee of the University Senate Academic Affairs Committee--considers both the academic and extracurricular activities of the nominees. The University Scholars received special medallions to be worn at Commencement during an April 25 reception at the Chancellor’s Residence hosted by Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw and Mary Ann Shaw, associate of the Chancellor.
