Syracuse University has hired Ian Coffey as an assistant swimming coach for the 2002-03 academic year. His responsibilities will include meet management, recruiting, team travel and on-deck coaching.
"What was most appealing about hiring Ian was the amount of significant coaching experience he already has," said Syracuse head coach Lou Walker. "He has spent the past two years coaching at a Division I school in our conference. Prior to that, he ran his own high school program for five years. As a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech, Ian was able to work under an innovative coach in Ned Skinner. Coach Skinner spoke very highly of him."
"I'm excited about the opportunity to work at a great academic institution as well as work alongside a great staff," said Coffey. "This team has a lot of talent and I look forward to working with them."
Coffey served as a graduate assistant coach for the men's and women's swimming teams at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 2000-2002. While in Blacksburg, he earned a master's of science degree in physical education in health promotions. He was also responsible for the on-deck coaching of 50 student-athletes, served as meet director for all home swim meets by operating the computerized Meet Manager system, coordinated academic study halls and assisted in the recruiting process of prospective student-athletes. Coffey helped produce a team newsletter, maintained an alumni and recruiting email database and served as a counselor at the Fighting Gobbler Swim Camp.
Prior to his stint at Virginia Tech, Coffey held the position of head swim coach at Mount Saint Joseph Academy (Pa.) from 1995-2000. His team posted a record of 32-16-3 in five seasons and Coffey was credited with developing the first swimmer at the school to ever achieve all-state status. As head coach, Coffey was responsible for team management, scheduling of meets, team travel and on-deck coaching.
A certified pool operator, Coffey is also CPR and Lifeguard certified. He belongs to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.
Coffey is a native of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor of arts degree in history from LaSalle University in 1999.
