
Coffman, Glatzel and Powell Add a World Championship to Their Resumes

PERTH, Australia (July 14) -- Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01) scored four goals and the United States overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat Canada 18-15 for the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. The U.S. has now won six consecutive ILF titles since losing the 1978 championship to Canada.
The U.S. jumped out to a 6-2 lead after one quarter, only to see Canada storm back in the second quarter. Canada outscored the U.S. 7-1 in the second quarter to take a 9-7 halftime lead. Shanahan, who will report to the New York Jets camp upon his return from Australia, scored the only U.S. goal of the quarter.
The U.S. regained control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Canada 6-1 to lead 13-10 entering the final quarter. Canada scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game 13-13, but the U.S. then ripped off four straight goals to put the game out of reach.
Darren Lowe (Brown '92) and Ryan Boyle (Princeton '04) added three goals for the U.S. and Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01), Kevin Lavey (Delaware '99) and Matt Striebel (Princeton '01) added two goals each. John Grant Jr. (Delaware '99) and Tracey Kelusky (Hartford '00) had four goals each to lead Canada.

PERTH, Australia -- (July 12) -- Kevin Lowe (Princeton '94) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the United States past the Iroquois Nationals 18-8 in the semifinal round of the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship at the UWA Sports Park. The U.S. will meet Canada for the ILF World Championship on July 14.
Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) made seven first half saves in goal to help the U.S. to a 9-2 halftime lead with Lowe netting three of his goals in the half. Michael Powell (Syracuse '04) also helped the U.S. to the fast start with a goal and two assists in the first quarter.
Multiple goal scorers for the U.S. included Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01) with three and Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01) with two each. Rutgers recruit Delby Powless, a former All-American at Herkimer Community College, led the Iroquois Nationals with four goals.
In the second semifinal, Canada overcame an early five-goal deficit to defeat host Australia 15-14. Australia led 7-2 after one quarter, but the Canadians pulled to within 8-7 at the half. Australia stretched the lead back to 11-8 late in the third quarter, but Canada went on a six-goal run to take a 14-11 lead and Australia was unable to get closer than one after that. Shawn Williams scored three key goals for the Canadians in the fourth quarter.
The U.S. and Canada will meet for the world title for the second straight time and the fifth time in the last seven ILF World Championships. The U.S. defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime for the 1998 ILF World Championship in Baltimore and has won five straight ILF World Championships since losing to Canada 17-16 in overtime in Manchester, England, in the 1978 ILF World Championship.

U.S. Defeats England, 21-3, in Final Round of Pool Play
PERTH, Australia -- (July 10) -- Twelve different players scored goals for
the United States in a 21- 3 victory over England in the International
Lacrosse Federation World Championship at the UWA Sports Park. The U.S.
finishes pool play with a 4-0 record in the Blue Division and advances to
the semifinals where it will play the winner of a play-in game between Japan
and the Iroquois Nationals. The semifinals will be played on July 12.
The U.S. scored six goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and cruised to the victory over England. Michael Powell (Syracuse '04) had a team-high seven points on two goals and five assists for the U.S. and Darren Lowe (Brown '92) added three goals and three assists. The U.S. also got three goals each from Bobby Benson (Johns Hopkins '03) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01). U.S. goalies Chris LaMonica (Hartford '97) and Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) each made four saves in the victory.
England got single tallies from Tom Caplin, Dave Carman and Paul Flowers.
Japan defeated Wales 21-8 today to win the Red Division with a perfect 5-0 record. The Iroquois Nationals went 1-3, including a 22-6 loss to the United States, to finish in fourth place in the Blue Division. They will play Japan on July 11. The Blue Division is comprised of the top five finishers from the previous ILF World Championship.
The second semifinal on July 12 will pit Canada against host Australia in a rematch of a game that Canada won 14-12 today.

U.S. Men's Lacrosse Posts a 14-9 Victory Against Archrival Canada
PERTH, Australia -- (July 9) -- Ryan Boyle (Princeton '04), Steve Dusseau
(Georgetown '02) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01) each scored three goals to
lead the United States past archrival Canada, 14-9, during the International
Lacrosse Federation World Championship at the UWA Sports Park. The victory
clinched the Blue Division for the United States (3-0), giving it the top
seed for the semifinals.
The U.S., which defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime to win the 1998 ILF World Championship in Baltimore, jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter as Dusseau scored all three of his goals in the quarter. The U.S. maintained the two-goal lead at the half after each team scored three goals in the second quarter.
In the third quarter the U.S. took advantage of a number of Canadian penalties, outscoring them 6-0 in the quarter to take a 13-5 lead. The U.S. stretched the lead to 14-5 in the fourth quarter. Paul Gait (Syracuse '90) scored two goals during a four-goal run by Canada to close the game, but it was too late. Canada finished the game with 29 penalties and the U.S. was whistled for nine.
Darren Lowe (Brown '92) added a goal and four assists for the U.S., while Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01) had two goals. Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) played the first half for the U.S. in goal and made five saves. Chris LaMonica (Hartford '97) played the second half and made 10 saves. Gait led Canada with three goals, while John Grant Jr. (Delaware '99) added two.

U.S. Team Aiming for Sixth Straight ILF Championship
Perth, Australia -- The United States Men's Lacrosse Team opened defense of its International Lacrosse Federation World Championship with a 21-6 victory over the Iroquois Nationals on July 6. Kevin Lowe (Princeton '94) led the U.S. with four goals.
After a scoreless opening 12 minutes, Scott Doyle (Georgetown '01) got the United States on the board with the first of his two goals and the U.S. used a 7-0 second quarter to open up a 12-1 halftime lead.
The U.S. had a balanced attack, getting at least two goals from seven players. Scoring three goals each were current college players Ryan Boyle (Princeton '04) and Bobby Benson (Johns Hopkins '03). Adding a pair of goals for the U.S. were Doyle, Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02), Josh Coffman (Syracuse '02) and Doug Shanahan (Hofstra '01).
The Iroquois Nationals are the only Native American sporting team to compete internationally. The team finished fourth in the 1998 ILF World Championship.
A record 15 nations are competing in this year's ILF championship. The last time the championship was held in Perth was in 1990 when only five nations competed. The first ILF championship was held in 1967 and since 1974 the event has been held every four years. The U.S. has won all but one ILF World Championship, losing to Canada in 1978. The U.S. defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime in Baltimore to win the 1998 title.

The U.S. jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and outshot Australia 51-27 in the contest. Darren Lowe (Brown '92), the only member of the U.S. winning team from 1998 on this year's squad, added three goals and three assists and Steve Dusseau (Georgetown '02) had three goals. U.S. goalies Chris LaMonica (Hartford '97) and Trevor Tierney (Princeton '01) combined to make 11 saves. Australia was led by Darren Nicholas with four goals.
