The Ray Guy Award candidate has already made his mark in the Syracuse record books. His 180 career punts is second in school history – 55 behind record-holder Jim Fox. Shafer also needs 2,260 yards this season to surpass Fox’s career mark of 9,626. In 2001, Shafer set the Orangemen record for most punts (77) and most punting yardage (3,282) in a single season.
Shafer was one of several Orangemen to earn All-BIG EAST honors last season. The punter joined teammates PJ Alexander, Willie Ford, Quentin Harris and James Mungro on the second team. Dwight Freeney, Sean O’Connor and Clifton Smith earned first-team 2001 honors. Smith is looking for his third straight First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2002.
Shafer and his Syracuse teammates kick off their 2002 season on August 29 in Provo, Utah against Brigham Young. The Orangemen will open the home portion of their schedule on September 7 when they host North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. For tickets call 888-DOMETIX or visit www.dometix.com.
