Orangemen Ready for Season Opener at BYU

The Syracuse Orangemen football team begins its 112th season tonight when it takes on Brigham Young University at 7:30 p.m. (EST). SU's road trip to Provo, Utah is the longest the Orangemen have traveled for a regular season away game during Paul Pasqualoni's tenure as head coach. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Clifton Smith returns to lead the Orangemen defense. The senior linebacker is a candidate for every national defensive award, including the Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy. Smith is a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection.

On offense, quarterback R.J. Anderson will guide the attack this season. Last season Anderson set a BIG EAST record for lowest interception percentage (1.39 - two interceptions in 144 attempts). He is 10-2 as SU's starting quarterback.

The two teams have met just once prior to tonight's game. Syracuse defeated BYU 42-14 in 2000 at the Carrier Dome.

Tonight's game will be broadcast on the Syracuse University Radio Network. Voice of the Orange Mark Johnson will serve as the play-by-play annoucer while Coach Dick MacPherson will provide color commentary. Listen to the Broadcast
