From 1975-1979, Bill Hurley wore #5 for the Orange. His 3,398 career passing yards was tops at SU when his eligibility ran out in 1979. He also remains in seventh place on Syracuse’s all-time rushing list.
In the mid-1980’s, Todd Philcox wore the number. After spending much of his career backing up All-American Don McPherson, Philcox stepped into the starting role in 1988. That season, he threw for 2,076 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also enjoyed a long career in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Syracuse’s career passing leader, naturally, donned No. 5. Marvin Graves, whose four-year total of 8,466 passing yards remains the Orangemen record, is Syracuse’s only three-time Bowl Game MVP.
The most recognizable No. 5 now wears the same number with the Philadelphia Eagles. From 1995-1998, Donovan McNabb dominated the BIG EAST competition. The athletic McNabb combined his passing and rushing abilities to become Syracuse’s career total offense leader, amassing 9,950 yards. His 77 career touchdown passes shattered Graves’ record of 48.
Syracuse kicks off the 2002 season on August 29 in Provo, Utah against Brigham Young. The Orangemen will open the home portion of their schedule on September 7 when they host North Carolina in the Carrier Dome. For tickets call 888-DOMETIX or visit www.dometix.com.
