SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women's soccer team was defeated by an opportunistic Texas Tech squad, 3-1, on the final day of the Orange Classic Tournament at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. Colgate and Buffalo tied, 1-1, in double overtime in the day's other game.
The Red Raiders (2-0-0) got on the board first when Michaela Roberts banged home a long cross past SU freshman keeper Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville, HS) at 27:27 for the 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (0-1-1) sophomore Stephanie Sybert (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) tied the game at 1-1 at 61:01. Sybert split two defenders and beat Tech keeper Lindsay Fish for her second goal in as many games. Fish was injured on the play and was replaced by Beth Lippert. SU Sophomore keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) substituted in for Kowalczyk as well.
Texas Tech midfielder Kerri Campbell scored the game-winning goal, beating Myers high far-post from the right side at 71:39. Sophomore Roxanne Frilot added an insurance goal on a direct free kick at 72:18 for the final 3-1 score.
Syracuse held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks, but was drawn offside by the Texas Tech defense nine times.
Lippert made five saves in relief of Fish for the Red Raiders. Kowalczyk made four saves for Syracuse in her collegiate debut.
Syracuse will play host to Robert Morris on Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium.
