SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the second straight game senior Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored the game-winning goal, giving the SU men's soccer team a 2-1 victory versus Loyola on Wednesday, September 18 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orangemen have won four straight games, improving their record to 4-2. Loyola has now lost two consecutive outings and now stands at 3-2.
Cristofori hit the game-winner in the 75th minute to break a 1-1 tie. Senior Eric Chapman (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) took possession in the Syracuse offensive end and touched the ball to freshman Jed Schenkier (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township). Schenkier then found Cristofori who was able to split two defenders and tally his fourth goal of the season. Schenkier and Chapman each recorded their first career points on the play.
Cristofori has now scored points in five consecutive games. He is tied for the team lead with four goals and nine points. Both totals are already more than his statistics from the 2001 season.
Sophomore Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) put the Orangemen up, 1-0, in the 19th minute with his fourth goal of the season. Park took a cross from freshman Ilias Calaitzidis (Brossard, Quebec/Champlain Regional) and beat the Greyhounds' keeper with a sliding shot. Park has now scored in four straight games. The assist was Calaitzidis' first point of the season.
The Greyhounds tied the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute with a goal by Bill Law. Steven Coleman and Julian Adriano de Oliveira had the assists on the play.
Loyola had a chance to tie the game in the final seven seconds. The Greyhounds had a direct kick that reached the goal but SU freshman goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) made a diving save that ended the game. Karim made four saves in the win. The Greyhounds' goal stopped a 238-minute scoreless streak for Karim. Reb Beatty made five saves for Loyola.
The Orangemen get back into BIG EAST play on Sautrday, September 21 at Seton Hall. SU returns home on Wednesday, September 25 versus Hartwick at 7 p.m.
