
Marks Scores Game-Winner as Field Hockey Beats Hofstra, 2-1

Senior midfielder Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) dribbled by at least two defenders in the second half and unleashed a shot that proved to be the game-winning goal as the No. 20-ranked Syracuse field hockey team defeated No. 21-ranked Hofstra, 2-1, at Coyne Field. It was just the second loss of the season for Hofstra, who at 6-2, was enjoying its best start in school history.
The Pride led, 1-0, at halftime. Shannon Watson shoved in a rebound after Hofstra had two previous shots saved by SU goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). The goal came at the 16:04 mark.
At 52:46 of the second half, junior midfielder Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa./Middleburg) tied the game at 1-1 when she pushed in a rebound from the left post on a penalty corner play. It was Sheaffer's second goal of the season and third of her career.
Marks' game-winner was tallied at the 58:48 mark. It was her second goal of the season and 10th of her career.
For the game, Syracuse outshot Hofstra, 16-6, and had 12 more penalty corners than the Pride.
Latsko finished with four saves for the Orangewomen, while Hofstra's Christine Hickey stopped eight shots. Kathryn Sergi came up with a defensive save for the Pride in the second half.
Syracuse (5-3) now prepares for a critical home contest against No. 17-ranked Boston College at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29. The Eagles have the best record in the BIG EAST at 6-2.
