
Orangemen Shut Out at Providence, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Syracuse men's soccer team allowed three first-half goals in a 3-0 loss at Providence College on Saturday, September 28. The Orangemen are now 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars improved to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Mauricio Solano scored Providence's first two goals of the game. He netted the first goal of the contest at the 10:01 mark with a header off a direct kick by Carlos Suero. Solano struck again in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick. The Friars ended the scoring in the 39th minute with a goal by Jeff Smith. Todd Stigliano had the assist.
The victory was just the Friars second in the last 11 games versus the Orangemen. Syracuse has now lost its last four conference road games.
Syracuse outshot the Friars, 11-10, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) made five saves in the loss. Jeff Newman earned the shutout for the Friars, making four saves.
The Orangemen return home for another conference matchup versus Villanova on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. The game versus the Wildcats will be Autograph Day at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse is 4-0 this season at home.
