Men's lacrosse student-athlete Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage H.S.) has sufficiently met all requirements necessary to gain readmission to the College of Human Services and Health Professions at Syracuse University. He was pronounced in good academic standing for the start of the spring semester, which commences Monday, Jan. 13.
"I am really looking forward to being back on campus," said Powell. "I am grateful for the opportunity to be back and plan on working as hard as I can both in the classroom and on the field this semester and throughout the remainder of my career at SU."
Powell, a two-time first-team All-American and Attackman of the Year, earned the 2002 Tewaaraton Trophy as the best player in college lacrosse. He will rejoin his SU teammates for his junior campaign when the first day of practice begins on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The Orangemen are the defending national champions in Division I. Last Memorial Day, Syracuse defeated Princeton, 13-12, for its eighth national championship. Powell was selected the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament with four goals and three assists in the final game against the Tigers.
"We're gearing up for the 2003 season and now we're doing it with Michael Powell on the roster," said head coach John Desko from the lacrosse coaches convention in Baltimore. "He did extremely well in the three courses he took this fall. Now, we're excited to get him back in uniform and out on the field."
The Orangemen will play a scrimmage against Navy at home on February 8, at 6 p.m. Their official season opener is scheduled for February 22, at Army. The 2003 home opener is against Virginia in a doubleheader with the women's team on March 1.
