
Third-rated Pittsburgh Snaps SU Winning Streak With 73-60 Victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 25/-- Syracuse men's basketball team lost its first game in 12 outtings, 73-60, at 3/3 Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Panthers extended their home winning streak to 16 games in front of a soldout Petersen Events Center (12,508).
Pittsburgh upped its record to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST while SU slipped to 11-2, 2-1.
Freshman #Gerry McNamara# led Syracuse with 19 points, three assists and three steals. Classmate #Carmelo Anthony# added 14 points, and sophomore #Hakim Warrick# scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.
Syracuse jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, six minutes into the game. A pair of free-throws by senior #Kueth Duany# extended the Orangemen's lead to 19-12 with 11:30 left in the half. Pittsburgh then went on a 14-3 run to take control of the contest, 26-22. McNamara made three-straight jump shots for SU as the clock wound down, but Julius Page added a pair of three-point buckets to give the Panthers a 34-28 advantage at the intermission.
Duany and Warrick each scored a bucket in the first 90 seconds of the second half to cut Pitt's lead to two, 34-32. The Panthers opened up a 10-point lead, 56-46, midway through the session. The Orangemen made 8-of-10 free-throw shots down the stretch, but made just three field goals in the final 10 minutes. Chevon Troutman scored 11 of Pittsburgh's last 17 points, including a three-point basket with 2:20 left in the game to give the Panthers an 18-point lead, 72-54. Syracuse freshman #Billy Edelin# made his collegiate debut and recorded his first points when he made the final basket of the game.
The Orangemen managed to hold Pitt senior Brandin Knight scoreless for the first time since Feb. 3, 2001, a 75-67 loss to Notre Dame. The Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year notched six assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Page led the all scorers with a personal-best 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Troutman finished with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting, and Donatas Zavackas scored 12 points, and added five rebounds and five assists.
Syracuse hosts Seton Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
