SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Five Orangemen notched double-digits in points as Syracuse improved to 12-2 with an 83-65 win against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. The Orangemen are now 3-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates drop to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# led SU with 22 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth-straight double-double. Freshman #Gerry McNamara# scored 21 points and added six assists and three steals. Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# added 11 points eight boards, and a personal-best four blocks. Senior #Kueth Duany# scored 10 points, including a six-for-six showing from the free-throw line. Freshman #Billy Edelin# recorded 11 points and six assists in his Carrier Dome debut.
Syracuse took its first lead of the game midway through the first half, 11-10. After the Pirates tied the score at 15, Warrick scored five-straight points to give the Orangemen a 20-15 advantage. SU widened the gap to 14, 34-20, with 2:30 left in the half, thanks in part to eight-points by McNamara. The Orangemen sank seven-straight free-throws to enter intermission with a 40-24 lead.
A pair of three-point buckets by Seton Hall's Andre Barrett cut SU's edge to seven, 42-35, five minutes into the second session. After trading buckets with the Pirates over the next two minutes, an 21-9 SU tear, keyed by six points from McNamara and five from Edelin, would give the Orange it's largest lead of the game, 71-50. Kelly Whitney scored six points in the final five minutes for the Hall, but Syracuse ended with an 18-point win, 83-65.
The Orangemen shot 50 percent or better from the floor (51.9) for the sixth time this season. Warrick connected on 8-of-11 field goal attempts for a team-best 72.7 shooting percentage on the night. Syracuse has won all five games when it has five players with double-figure scoring this season.
SU continues its BIG EAST schedule at Miami on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
