
SU "D" Delivers In Win At Miami, 54-49

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Syracuse defense held Miami scoreless over the final 8:37 of the game and rallied from an eight-point, second-half deficit to defeat the Hurricanes at the Convocation Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The Orangemen improve to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in BIG EAST play. Miami is now 8-8 on the season, and 1-4 in the conference.
Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# led the way offensively for the Orangemen with 18 points, along with five rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior #Kueth Duany# added 17 points and four assists. Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# netted 12 points and tied his career high with 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.
Trailing 13-10 with 12:31 remaining in the first half, Duany and Anthony each scored five points to key a 10-0 Syracuse run which gave the Orangemen a 20-13 lead with 8:25 remaining. Miami responded with a 17-3 run of its own to take a 30-25 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Miami junior Darius Rice's layup gave the Hurricanes an eight-point lead with 19:00 left in the game, 35-27. Dunks by Warrick and Duany cut the Miami advantage to four, 35-31. A three-pointer by Duany pulled the Orangemen to within one, 35-34, with 16 minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets for the next 10 minutes until a follow-up dunk by Warrick on a Duany three-point miss gave Syracuse the lead for good, 50-49, with six minutes left to play. Warrick scored eight of Syracuse's final 11 points, including four free-throws down the stretch.
Rice led the Hurricanes with 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. James Jones added 11 points, and Robert Hite notched 10 points and six boards. Miami missed its final 17 field-goal attempts, 10 of them from beyond the arc.
The Orangmen's defense allowed a season-low 49 points and forced 10 steals. Syracuse is 11-0 this season when holding opponents to 70 points or less. Anthony's 14 rebounds is an SU series-high against the Hurricanes.
Syracuse will travel to Rutgers on Wednesday, Jan. 29, for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
