"I am honored to be inducted," Kater said. "I have a great deal of respect for UMass and my experience there not just as an athlete, but as a student."
A 1991 graduate of Massachusetts, Kater was the 1987 Soccer America Freshman of the Year, a three-time NSCAA First Team All-American from 1988-90, and the 1990 Hermann Award Winner, given to college soccer's best player. She was an adidas First Team Academic All-American in 1989 and 1990 and led the Minutewomen to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1987 NCAA Championship game.
"April was very team-oriented and concerned with what the team did," UMass head women's coach Jim Rudy said. "The awards she achieved are really hard to do nowadays. She was a great representative of what every student-athlete should be."
Kater became SU's first and only head women's soccer coach in 1995. She has compiled a 79-49-7 (.619 winning pct.) since SU's inaugural varsity season in 1996 and led the Orangewomen to the 1998 and 2001 NCAA Tournaments.
