BOSTON, Mass. - Syracuse University graduate student Alison Culley set a school record in the 55-meter dash to lead the Orangewomen track & field team at the fifth annual Husky Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday night. The Orangewomen finished third out of 15 teams with 79 points, while the men's team finished fourth out of 14 teams with 95.5 points.
Culley, who now owns or is a part of six SU records, sped to a 7.02 second-place finish in the 55 meters. The mark bested Maretta Hagwood's time of 7.03, set in 1993, and qualified Culley for the ECAC and BIG EAST Championships. She also won the 200-meter dash in 24.45.
Graduate student Aprelle Watkins won the long jump (18-11 3/4) and triple jump (40-6) to lead the Orangewomen in the field. Watkins qualified for BIG EAST and ECAC competition in both events. Senior Aleccia Boland finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run in 10:06.55. Sophomore Jenna Grimaldi placed third in the high jump, clearing 5-8.
The Orangemen had a strong showing in the field events, winning three events and claiming three of the top four spots in the long jump. Senior Richard Polidore won the long jump with a mark of 23-10 3/4, followed by junior Joshua Johnson (22-11) and a fourth-place finish by freshman Craig Stivala (21-10). Johnson won the triple jump with a mark of 49-11 3/4, while Polidore finished third with 45-9.
Senior Matt Troha won the high jump, clearing 6-6. Classmate Tim Adrian threw 53-9 in the shot put for third place. Freshman Valerij Petrulevich qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in his first collegiate race with a 49.66 fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash.
Syracuse returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 9, when it plays host to the Syracuse Invitational at Manley Field House.
