
Syracuse Scores 70-66 Come-From-Behind Win in BIG EAST Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior captain #Kueth Duany# scored nine straight Syracuse points late in the second half as SU rallied to a 70-66 victory in the Orangemen's BIG EAST opener at Seton Hall. Duany led all scorers with 20 points, including 15 after the intermission.
Duany shot 6-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# led Syracuse with seven rebounds along with seven points. Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# was second on the squad with 18 points and five boards. Freshman #Gerry McNamara# also finished with double-digits in points with 17.
The Orangemen jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, with Anthony scoring five points in the opening minutes. Syracuse held a 21-17 advantage when the Pirates started a 14-0 run to take a 31-21 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. The Orangemen answered with 10 unanswered points to knot the score at 31. SHU's John Allen made two-of-four free throws as the seconds ticked off to help the Pirates to a 35-31 advantage at halftime.
Although Seton Hall led for most of the second period, Syracuse never allowed the Pirates to pull away. The biggest lead SHU enjoyed was eight points, 53-45, with nine minutes left in the game. McNamara connected on two straight three-point attempts, then added three free throws to tie the game at 56 with six minutes on the clock. Syracuse regained possession, and a Duany dunk started his nine-point streak as he gave the Orangemen the lead for good.
Seton Hall finished with four players in double figures in scoring, and three Pirates played the full 40 minutes. Kelly Whitney, who played the entire game, led SHU with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, and added eight caroms. Allen added 16 points, six boards and six assists in his 40-minute stint. Andre Barrett, who also played the full 40, had 10 points and nine helpers. Andre Sweet notched 11 points off the bench.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome for a BIG EAST match-up with Boston College on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
