SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# and freshman #Carmelo Anthony# each recorded double-doubles as Syracuse (10-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) won its BIG EAST home opener, 82-74, against Boston College (6-6, 0-2 BIG EAST) Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The win was the Orangemen's 10th straight.
Warrick scored 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds, including a personal-best 10 defensive boards. Anthony scored 24 points and grabbed 10 caroms as he notched his eighth double-double in 11 games. Freshman guard #Gerry McNamara# netted 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He went 4-for-4 from the foul line, extending his streak to 30-for-30 from the charity stripe dating back to Dec. 3. He also tied his career high with four steals.
The Orangemen used a 13-0 run, which included two three-point buckets by McNamara, to take an early 17-4 lead at 13:22. Throughout the remainder of the session, the Eagles answered most Syracuse baskets with buckets of their own, but the Orange maintained at least an eight-point advantage throughout the period, including a 15-point lead with two minutes to play, 40-25. Seven SU players got on the board in the first half, including McNamara with 12 points and Anthony with 10, to help the Orangemen to a 40-32 half-time advantage. B.C.'s Troy Bell and Craig Smith each had 12 points at the intermission.
Syracuse extended it's lead to 12, 46-34, in the opening minutes of the second half. The Eagles then used the next four minutes and a 14-2 scoring streak to tie the game at 48. B.C. led by as many as five, 57-52 with 10 minutes left on the clock. The Orangemen relied on 13-for-17 free-throw shooting down the stretch to regain their advantage and widen the scoring gap. Bell scored 10 of the Eagles' last 16 points, but it was Syracuse that ended up on the winning end of the 82-74 decision.
Bell finished with a game-high 29 points along with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Smith notched a double-double with 26 points and 10 boards. Ryan Sidney scored 11 points and added eight caroms for the Eagles.
