Senior forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) had a hand in all three Syracuse goals as the Orangewomen defeated the visiting Massachusetts Minutewomen, 3-0, at Coyne Field. All three goals were tallied in the first half. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved SU's season record to 4-6.
Guglieri set up Syracuse's first two goals as she stopped the ball on two penalty corners and fed it to scorers Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) and Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley). Lombard's goal, her team-leading fifth of the season (ninth of her career) was a hard shot sent to the left of UMass goalie Christine Tocco at the 14:27 mark. Sola, a sophomore back, notched her second goal of the season in a similar fashion, blasting a shot from the top of the circle at 27:01.
Guglieri made it 3-0 with 2:40 remaining in the first half when she chased after a teammate's long pass that looked like no one would ever have a chance at. Guglieri never gave up on it and beat Tocco to the loose ball, tapping it into the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) recorded her second shutout of the season (third of her career) with seven saves, including four in the second half.
Tocoo registered all threee of her saves in the second half. The Minutewomen were able to force 10 penalty corners in the contest. Robin Dziedic attempted a team-high three shots.
Massachusetts lost its seventh consecutive match to drop to 2-9 on the season.
The Orangewomen gear up for two home contests next week, beginning with an important BIG EAST Conference tilt against Villanova on Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 12, Syracuse hosts Lafayette at 1 p.m.
