SYRACUSE, N.Y. --Freshman #Terrence Roberts# had a career-high 12 points to lead 12 players who scored for #19/21 Syracuse (3-1) in a 75-54 triumph against Binghamton in the Carrier Dome on Dec. 13.
Roberts was 5-of-6 from the floor, including his first career three-pointer. Junior #Hakim Warrick# and sophomore #Gerry McNamara# each tallied nine points. Warrick also added a career-high five assists and seven rebounds. Sophomore #Matt Gorman# netted a personal-best eight points and freshman #Louie McCroskey# played 13 minutes in his first collegiate game and finished with five points. Senior #Jeremy McNeil# played a solid all-around game, tallying six points, a team-high nine boards, four blocks and two steals.
It was the first time the Orange had only one player in double figures since March 18, 2000 when Syracuse defeated Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Preston Shumpert was the lone SU player in double digits with 12 points.
With score tied at 16, the Orangemen used a 17-4 run to open up a 13-point advantage 33-20 at the 4:49 mark of the first half. Roberts had nine of his points during the stretch and capped the streak with a triple and Syracuse took a 40-29 lead into the locker room.
Binghamton (3-5) cut the SU lead to eight, 44-36, with 17:56 left in regulation on a layup by Alex Adediran, but would not get any closer. Syracuse extended its margin to 13 on a basket by Warrick and McCroskey's first career trey gave the Orange an 18-point lead, 63-45, at 8:16. A fast-break layup by McCroskey gave the Orangemen their biggest lead of the game with 1:28 left, 73-50.
Brandon Carter led the Bearcats with 13 points and Sebastian Hermenier and Troy Hailey also scored in double figures with 10 and 11 points, respectively. Binghamton's leading scorer Nick Billings finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Orange defense forced 16 turnovers for the second time this season. It also had 16 takeaways versus Charlotte in the season-opener. Syracuse also blocked a season-high 11 shots, including the first two collegiate rejections by freshman #Demetris Nichols#.
It was the 23rd consecutive win for Syracuse against teams from New York State. SU has not lost a contest against an Empire State opponent since St. John's defeated the Orange, 76-75, on Feb. 19, 2000.
The Orangemen have won 10 straight December matchups. The last time the Orange lost a game in the last month of the year was on Dec. 16, 2001, a 96-80 decision versus Georgia Tech.
The Orangemen will play their next eight games at home starting with Manhattan on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
