SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University redshirt freshman linebacker Kelvin Smith was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-American Third Team.
Smith averaged 5.7 tackles per game, which led first-year players in the BIG EAST and tied for 38th overall. His tackle average tied for 19th among linebackers in the league. Smith had 68 total tackles, including 50 solo stops. He had at least five tackles in eight of 12 games in 2003. Smith stepped into the starting linebacker role after senior Jameel Dumas suffered a knee injury in the first overtime at North Carolina. He is one of seven starters on defense who will be returning for 2004.
Smith, the nephew of former Orangeman and current Tennessee Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck, was also named to The Sporting News Freshman All-BIG EAST Team.
