“Between now and Christmas the team will practice eight hours a week, which gives the athletes a little bit more time to focus on school and other things in their lives, as well as give their bodies an opportunity to recover from the fall,” head coach Kris Sanford said.
The end of fall racing also gives Sanford time to re-evaluate where the team is, where individual athletes are and to determine the course of training for the next six months based upon the make-up of the team.
"Fall rowing is always a good indicator of who has made the commitment to step up and make the team better, Sanford said. “Boats are determined based on a scoring system utilizing erg scores and the results of pair trials, so it really leaves the subjectivity out of it. Our athletes are truly in control of their own destiny and it is exciting to see who thrives in this type of environment."
Upon SU’s return from Florida, the Orangewomen will remain indoors erging, rowing in tanks, strength training, and doing various cross-training activities before heading back to Florida for spring training.
The Orangewomen will host Boston University and Duke in the first race of the spring season on March 27. The Kittell Cup, which goes to the Boston University-Syracuse winner will be on the line. The Orangewomen took possession of the trophy in the inaugural competition by defeating the Terriers in 2003.
