Smith averaged 5.7 tackles per game, which led the BIG EAST for first-year players and tied for 38th overall. His tackles numbers tied for 19th among linebackers in the league. He had 68 total tackles, including 50 solo. Smith has had at least five tackles in eight of 12 games this season. He stepped into the starting linebacker role after senior Jameel Dumas suffered a knee injury in the first overtime at North Carolina. Smith started every game but the first at North Carolina.
Carney averaged 43.0 yards per punt, which ranked 25th nationally. He punted 60 times for 2,581 yards and landed 18 punts inside the 20 yard line. His punting yardage ranks fifth on SU’s single-season record list and his average of 43.0 yards per punt is also fifth-best in a season at SU. Carney had four punts of 50-or-more yards against West Virginia, marking the most 50-yard punts for SU since Mike Shafer had five against the Mountaineers in 2001. Carney had 18 punts of 50-or-more yards this season.
Lemon, who started the first two games at cornerback, finished the season with 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops, and two pass breakups. He played in 11 of SU’s 12 games.
