The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team is ranked 14th in the IWLCA’s 2003 Division I Preseason Poll, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Assocation Poll on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Seven of the Orangewomen’s 2003 opponents were featured in the top 20 poll, including six in the top 10. Virginia, SU’s first opponent of 2003, was ranked third with 184 points and also received two first-place votes. The Orangewomen will play back-to-back road games against Maryland and Georgetown, who were selected to finish sixth and fourth, respectively.
BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame was picked to finish seventh and local rival Cornell was at the ninth position. Loyola, one of SU’s new additions to its schedule, was ranked fifth and Dartmouth rounded out the opponents in the top 20 at the No. 12 spot. Defending national champion Princeton took the top position with 189 points.
The Orangewomen finished the 2002 season 10-6. They were ranked as high as seventh in the IWLCA poll last season after defeating Virginia for the first time in the program’s history. SU opens its season against Virginia on Saturday, March 1, at noon in the Carrier Dome.
