SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 15/17 Syracuse basketball team maintained its half-game lead in the BIG EAST's West Division with a 66-60 win against St. John's (12-10, 5-7 BIG EAST), Tuesday at the Carrier Dome. The Orangemen (18-4, 9-3 BIG EAST) are now 15-0 at home, marking the first time SU has started the season with 15 consecutive Dome wins.
Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# notched his 14th double-double of the year with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Senior #Kueth Duany# added 17 points and freshman #Gerry McNamara# contributed 13 points, including four from the foul line which extended his consecutive free-throws made streak to 30. The Syracuse record is 34, held by Mike Lee.
The Red Storm took an early lead and SU didn't catch up until the midway point of the first half when Duany converted a three-point play to tie the game at 13. Syracuse went ahead 23-22 with five minutes left, and went on to take a 33-27 halftime advantage after Anthony scored five straight points to close out the period.
The Orangemen built their lead to 10 points, 42-32, at 13:59 in the second. The Red Storm scored 13 straight points over the next five minutes to take a 45-42 edge. St. John's led as late as the 4:36 mark of the session, 54-51. A McNamara trifecta on Syracuse's next possession gave SU the tie, and the Orangemen never looked back. Eight-for-nine shooting from the charity stripe helped Syracuse preserve the victory.
The Red Storm's Marcus Hatten set a St. John's record and tied the Carrier Dome record with 10 steals on the night. Combined with his 22 points, Hatten had a double double. He also dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds. St. John's also set several records with 41 three-point attempts: it was a school record, a Dome record, and a BIG EAST regular-season record. Elijah Ingram's 20 attempts from beyond the arc were also school and BIG EAST records.
The Orangemen travel to Michigan State on Sunday, Feb. 23, for their final non-conference regular-season tilt of the year. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
