Swimming & Diving Finishes Eighth at BIG EAST Championship

Junior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) set a new school record in the women's 200-yard butterfly on the final day of the 2003 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, where her Syracuse Orangewomen finished eighth out of 12 teams with 179 points. The Orangemen totaled 199 points to also conclude the three-day event with an eighth-place finish.
The University of Notre Dame women's swimming and diving team and the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team each earned their seventh straight BIG EAST Championship this weekend at the Goodwill Games Pool in East Meadow, N.Y. The Fighting Irish finished with a team score of 730, 150 points ahead of second-place Rutgers. The Panthers finished with a score of 708, 135 points ahead of second-place Virginia Tech.
McDonough turned in SU's top finish of the conference meet when she won silver in the finals of the women's 200-yard butterfly Saturday night with a time of 2:01.14. Her preliminary time of 2:00.90 posted earlier in the day now stands as the new school record. McDonough previously owned the 200 fly record at SU with a mark of 2:01.28.
On Friday night, McDonough recorded a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.72.
Scoring points for the Orangemen on the final night of action included freshman Rob Persico (Fulton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) in the 200 backstroke (1:50.00), sophomore Josh Scott (Clayton, Calif./Clayton Valley HS) in the 200 backstroke (1:49.88), and sophomore Mike Anstrom (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) in the 100 freestyle (45.41).
Orangewomen who contributed points on the final night were junior Kalei Mahi (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame) in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.28), senior Jennifer Jonusaitis (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada/Mount St. Joseph College) in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.42) and sophomore Elisa James (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) in the 200 butterfly (2:03.94).
SU's three male divers will next be in competition at the NCAA Zone Meet on March 14-16, at the University of Buffalo. It will be the first time since 1996 that Syracuse has sent men to the zone meet.
