SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five Syracuse players recorded double-digits in points as the 19/21 Orangemen defeated BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 88-80, Monday at the Carrier Dome. SU (15-3, 6-2 BIG EAST) is now 6-0 this season when five Orangemen score 10 or more points.
Freshmen #Gerry McNamara# and #Carmelo Anthony# led SU with 22 points each. Senior #Kueth Duany# finished with 15 points. Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# posted 11 points and seven rebounds, and freshman #Billy Edelin# added 10 points.
Syracuse led for most of the first half, as Anthony and McNamara each scored 11 points by the intermission. Georgetown (10-8, 2-6 BIG EAST) took its first lead of the game, 17-15, with 13 minutes on the clock after running off seven straight points. Syracuse was up 25-23 with nine minutes left to play when the Orangemen went on an 11-2 tear that included a pair of three-point baskets by Anthony and another by McNamara to take their biggest lead of the session, 36-25. Edelin scored four of his six first-half points in the final five minutes as Syracuse took a 42-36 advantage at the break.
The Hoyas stayed within five points of the Orangemen through the first 10 minutes of the second half, as GU's Mike Sweetney scored nine points over that stretch. SU extended its lead to 10, 69-59, as Warrick scored eight-straight points, including back-to-back three-point plays. The Orangemen made 14-straight free-throws in the last four minutes, including eight by McNamara and six by Anthony, to put the Hoyas away.
McNamara's 8-for-8 shooting from the charity strip extended his consecutive free-throws streak to 24. He is 35-for-35 from the foul line in BIG EAST games this season. The Orangemen's 88 points were their most against the Hoyas since March 4, 1990, when SU earned an 89-87 overtime victory at the Dome.
Syracuse goes on the road for a pair of BIG EAST contests, at West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 4:00 p.m., then at 17/18 Connecticut on Monday, Feb. 10, at 7:00 p.m.
