
Anthony And Edelin Hit Career Highs In 94-80 Win At WVU

MORGANTOWN, WVa. – Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# and #Billy Edelin# posted career highs with 29 and 18 points, respectively, as 19/21 Syracuse (16-3, 7-2 BIG EAST) defeated West Virginia (12-8, 3-5 BIG EAST), 94-80 Saturday.
Sixteen of Anthony's 29 points came in the first half as the Orangemen rallied from an early 15-point deficit. He also added a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman #Gerry McNamara# notched his second double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 12 assists. Sophomore #Hakim Warrick# scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and senior #Kueth Duany# added 11 points. It was the seventh time this season five Orangemen have scored in double-figures. Syracuse is 7-0 in those games.
West Virginia jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, at the 17:45 mark of the fisrt half on back-to-back three's by Kevin Pittsnogle and Tyrone Sally. Drew Schifino scored five straight points to extend the Mountaineer advantage to 13, 29-16, with 13:20 left in the half. The Orangemen roared back to take their first lead of the game, 37-36 with 7:15 left on the strength of a 21-5 run. Anthony scored eight points during the stretch, including two three-pointers. A three by McNamara gave Syracuse its biggest lead of the half 46-38 with 3:45 left in the frame. West Virginia scored the final nine points of the half to take one-point lead 47-46 at the break.
The Orangemen scored the first eight points of the second half to take 54-47 lead at the 18:20 mark. A jumper by Pittsnogle cut the Syracuse lead to four, 58-54 with 17:05 to play. A dunk by Warrick capped a 21-12 Syracuse run and gave the Orangemen their largest lead of the game, 79-66, with 6:50 remaining. The Syracuse defense held off the Mountaineers the rest of the way for the 12-point victory.
Drew Schifino led the West Virginia with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Kevin Pittsnogle scored 24 points, including three three-pointers, and Tyrone Sally added 11 points.
The Orangemen will play at 17/18 Connecticut on Monday, Feb. 10. The contest will begin at 7 p.m.
