Freshman attackman/midfielder Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) scored a game-high four goals, all in the second half, to help preseason No. 1-ranked Syracuse to a 13-9 victory against Navy in the first scrimmage of the season for both teams at the Carrier Dome. The Naval Academy was ranked No. 14 by Face-Off Yearbook's Preseason Coaches Poll.
The two teams played five quarters of action. Statistics were kept during the first four periods of play, as in an official game.
The Orangemen jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the first quarter behind goals from attackmen Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Liam Banks (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin). Navy then scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-3 lead at the 10:04 mark of the second period. Dan Eddy, Jon Birsner, Graham Gill and Adam Gill each scored during the spurt.
Springer fed junior attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) to tie the score at 4-4, and then tallied his second goal of the contest at 5:12 of the second quarter to give the Orangemen a 5-4 halftime lead.
Crockett was thrown into the game at the midfield position and wasted little time getting the Orangemen on the scoreboard with his first goal just 12 seconds into the third quarter. He gave SU a two-goal cushion (7-5) when he converted a Powell feed at the 12:54 mark, but Navy clawed back to tie the contest at 7-7 with goals by Ian Dingman and Ben Bailey. With 3:41 remaining in the third period, Crockett registered his third goal off a pass from Springer, but once again, Navy tied the score at 8-8, this time off a goal by James Sullivan.
Powell recorded back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter. He scored his second goal of the game at 14:00 and then used a behind-the-back shot from the right side of the cage at the 11:06 mark to give SU a 10-8 lead.
Crockett extended the Orangemen's lead to 11-8 with his fourth goal at the 10:31 mark of the fourth quarter.
Adam Reel tallied Navy's only goal of the period at the 6:01 mark.
SU finished the fourth period with two more goals from Nee and junior midfielder Steve Lykudis (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).
Sophomore Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) started in goal for Syracuse and played the entire first half. He faced 14 shots, stopped three and allowed four goals. Junior Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) played the entire second half in goal and finished with six saves. He faced 21 shots and allowed five goals.
Seth DiNola started in goal for Navy. He totaled all eight of the Midshipmen's saves.
Powell finished as the game's high scorer with six points (three goals, three assists). Springer ended up with two goals and three assists.
The Orangemen host preseason No. 5-ranked Maryland in the Carrier Dome for their second scrimmage of the season at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13. Admission is free.
