
Men's Lacrosse Beats Fairfield, 19-6

Attackmen Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) each scored five goals as the No. 4-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team defeated Fairfield, 19-6, at the Carrier Dome. It was the largest margin of victory for the Orangemen since a 19-4 win against Hobart last season.
Syracuse (2-1) led 8-0 by the 12:48 mark of the second quarter. Springer scored four of his goals in the game's first nine minutes. Junior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) tallied two goals and had an assist during the opening spurt.
Fairfield matched the Orangemen with three second-period goals. The Stags got on the scoreboard for the first time at the 9:18 mark when Matt Baglio found a cutting Troy Bamann. After SU pushed its lead to 10-1 following goals by Powell and freshman Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown), Baglio and Bamann teamed up again, this time with Baglio finding the back of the net at 3:36. With 1:41 remaining in the first half, Baglio assisted Ryan Catterton. The score was 10-3 at halftime.
The Orangemen outscored the Stags, 6-0, in the third quarter. Powell recorded two goals, while Crockett notched a goal and an assist. Springer registered goal No. 5 with 1:51 left in the period which gave SU a 16-3 advantage.
The Stags scored three goals in the final quarter. Rory McCarthy, Garrett Bamann and Matt Buecker all scored. Garrett Bamann's goal was a man-down marker at 5:45. He was assisted by his brother, Troy, and it kept the difference at 13 goals (18-5).
Junior attackman Alex Zink (Rowayton, Conn./Darien) was credited with SU's final goal of the game at the 4:11 mark. He finished with a career-high three points (one goal, two assists). Buecker was responsible for the game's final goal with 3:34 remaining.
C.J, Kemp played the entire game in goal for Fairfield and finished with 13 saves. Sophomore Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) started for Syracuse and recorded two saves in the first 37:58 of action. Junior Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) played the final 22 minutes and also ended up with two saves.
Chris Bickel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Jake Plunket (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) combined to help Syracuse win the battle at the face-off X, 17-11. Bickel won 14 of 19 draws, while Plunket won 2-of-5. Sophomore Chris DiMarco (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) also won a faceoff for the Orangemen at the end of the game.
Powell broke into the school's top 20 all-time scoring list. He surpassed Roy Colsey (163 career points) and is now 19th with 165 career points (78 goals, 87 assists). Springer, who is 16th in scoring all-time at SU, improved his career numbers to 188 points (134 goals, 54 assists). Springer leads the team in scoring so far this season with 11 goals and eight assists. He is averaging 6.33 points per game after SU's first three contests.
Fairfield is 1-2 on the season.
The Orangemen will next be in action on Saturday, March 15, when they host No. 1-ranked Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. It will be a special day for the Syracuse lacrosse program as the 1983 team will be recognized before the game for winning the school's first NCAA championship 20 years ago. More than 100 former SU lacrosse players will be in attendance for the reunion/alumni celebration.
